Murray (Medical Humanities, Dalhousie U. Halifax) is author of over 200 medical books and articles, including Multiple Sclerosis: A Guide for the Newly Diagnosed. In this book, he provides a history of MS and demonstrates how progress in diagnosing and managing the disease has paralleled the development of medical science--from early developments in studies of anatomy and pathology, to the accurate definition of the disease in the nineteenth century, and eventually to modern diagnosis and treatment. Early cases of MS are related to illustrate the historical impact of the disease on its sufferers, including the blessed Lindwina of Holland, Augustus D'Este, grandson of George III and cousin of Queen Victoria, and the German poet Heinrich Heine. Black and white illustrations are included, as well as an afterword by the author and a chronology of events in the history of MS.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
