About this book
Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Foot and Ankle has been written for foot
and ankle orthopaedic surgeons and presents procedures of many of the pioneers
in less invasive surgery of the foot and ankle. The concept of not having to
perform extensive soft tissue dissection and perform extra-articular surgery
is appealing. Minimization of post-operative stiffness, sparing of soft tissue,
less post-operative pain, less problems with wounds, better cosmesis, shorter
operating times and shorter hospital stay are all benefits of minimally invasive
procedures. The requests of patients and the imagination of surgeons has prompted
more and more orthopaedic surgeons to perform surgery through small incisions
in the foot and ankle, which have the clear advantages of less morbidity and
faster recovery than the equivalent open procedures. The book explains the management
of various conditions of the foot and ankle and how they can be approached using
minimally invasive techniques. However, rather than only concentrating on minimally
invasive surgery, all options open to surgeons operating in this area are examined
– both open surgical and arthroscopic – with an explanation of the
benefits of each. Extensive radiographs, diagrams, and intra-operative pictures
illustrate the procedures described and combine to provide a clear and highly
useful tool in diagnosis and management of foot and ankle disorders.
