This book provides a first complete, integrative guide to the field of image-guided interventions in guidance, monitoring, control, and evaluation of minimally-invasive or non-invasive therapies, including thermal and radiation therapy, surgery and drug delivery. It addresses the new and emerging technologies and methods, starting with basic, accessible overviews of all the main modalities through to 3D C-arm, molecular imaging, nanotechnoloties, embolotherapies, magnetic drug targeting, and robotics. It presents expert overviews on the science, engineering, and clinical applications of imaging and treatments for minimally invasive therapies.
Dr. Keyvan Farahani is the Program Director for Image-Guided Interventions (IGI), Cancer Imaging Program, National Cancer Institute and Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. At NCI he is responsible for the development of NCI initiatives that address diagnosis and treatment of cancer through integration of advanced imaging and minimally invasive technologies. He has led NCI initiatives in Oncologic IGI focused on small business development, early phase clinical trials, and image-guided drug delivery systems, including nanotechnologies. Dr. Farahani is a graduate of the UCLA Biomedical Physics Program (PhD ’93). He is a past chair of the Interventional MRI Study Group of ISMRM and a current member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, and chair of the AAPM work group on image-guided interventions.
Dr. Eleni Liapi is an Assistant Professor in Radiology and Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Liapi obtained her medical degree from the University of Ioannina, Faculty of Medicine, Greece and a Master’s of Science in Clinical Investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in Baltimore, MD. With a Diagnostic Radiology training and a research focus on interventional oncology, magnetic hyperthermia and image- guided interventions, Dr. Liapi has coauthored and presented more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, various book chapters and numerous national and international scientific meeting presentations on imaging and image-guided therapies of liver cancer.
