Anita Finkelman, MSN, RN is a nurse educator and consultant. She is currently visiting faculty at School of Nursing Bouvé College of Health Sciences Northeastern University. Some of her past positions include Assistant Professor of Nursing at University of Oklahoma College of Nursing where she taught undergraduate and graduate nursing research online and serving as course coordinator for undergraduate nursing research, and was awarded a VA Nursing Academy program grant to develop a special undergraduate long-term experience at the VA and develop a summer internship and a post-graduate nurse residency program. At the University of Cincinnati she was associate professor, clinical nursing and also Director of the Undergraduate Program. She has managed several projects to migrate nursing curriculum to distance learning. Her BSN is from Texas Christian University Harris College of Nursing, masters degree in psychiatric-mental health nursing/clinical specialist from Yale University. She completed post-masters graduate work in healthcare policy and administration at George Washington University with additional health policy work was completed as a fellow of the Health Policy Institute, George Mason University. Ms. Finkelman’s thirty-five plus years of nursing experience includes clinical, educational, and administrative positions, and considerable experience developing distance learning programs, development of curriculum and other online products related to simulation learning, and teaching online, and she has served as Director of Staff Education for two acute care hospitals and as Director of Continuing Education at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing. As a consultant Ms. Finkelman works in the area of distance education, curriculum particularly with emphasis on Institute of Medicine core competencies, teaching strategies, and health care administration. She has authored many books, journal articles, served on editorial boards and currently is on the editorial board for Home Healthcare Nurse. Professor Finkelman has lectured on administration, health policy, continuing education, and psychiatric-mental health nursing, both nationally and internationally, particularly in Israel for Ben Gurion University where she has developed and intensive interprofesssional health care study abroad program partnered with Northeastern University and consulted with Hebrew University Hadassah School of Nursing. She serves as a consultant to publishers and health care organizations in areas of distance education and product development. In addition to this textbook Professional Nursing Concepts: Competencies for Quality Leadership, other major textbooks include Teaching IOM: Implications of the Institute of Medicine Reports for Nursing Education (ANA, 2009, 2nd Ed.), Leadership and Management for Nurses (2012; Pearson Education, 2nd Ed.), and Case Management for Nurses ( Pearson Education, 2011). Her book Teaching IOM has been a best seller and both editions have won awards from the Society for Technical Communication, Washington, D.C. (2008 and 2010). She has presented workshops across the country focusing on this book for nurse educators and presented at nursing conferences in the U.S. and internationally.

Carole Kenner, PhD, RN-C, NIC, FAAN-President, Council of International Neonatal Nurses, Edmond, Oklahoma

Carole Kenner, PhD, RNC-NIC, FAAN is the Dean and Professor in the School of Nursing and Associate Dean Bouvé College of Health Sciences, Northeastern University, where she has held these positions since January 2010. Her research and career have been dedicated to the health of neonates and their families, as well as educational and professional development of healthcare practices in neonatology. Her leadership in maternal-child nursing with special emphasis in neonatal palliative care has provided her with international recognition. She is also interested in the research areas of transition from hospital to home for mothers and babies, fetal alcohol syndrome, family context for clinical genetics and families of newly diagnosed children with cancer. The common thread is the family context and supporting the families undergoing a crisis due a child’s illness or death. Dean Kenner’s dedication includes providing a healthcare standard for educating neonatal nurses nationally and internationally. Her passion led her to begin the journal Newborn and Infant Nursing Reviews, which she now serves as the international column editor, along with her many other accomplishments. She continues to prove her commitment by serving on the Consensus Committee of Neonatal Intensive Care Design Standards, which sets worldwide recommendations for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit designs and serves on the Nursing Advisory Committee of the National March of Dimes. Her influence has developed policy for the care of the neonate and the reduction of infant mortality both nationally and internationally. She is a past president of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN) and in addition, Dean Kenner founded and remains President of the Council of International Neonatal Nurses (COINN), which is the first international organization to represent neonatal nursing and nursing development at this level. Because of her passion in neonatal education, she was invited to the United Nations Children’s Fund to take part of the health policy meeting organized by the Government of Norway and UNICEF. She is the 2010 recipient for the STAN and MAVIS GRAVEN award for her leadership in enhancing the physical and environments for the high-risk infants.

Dr. Kenner received her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing, Cincinnati, Ohio. She received her Master’s of Science in Nursing with a specialty of Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and her Doctor of Nursing Science/Doctor of Philosophy from Indiana University School of Nursing, Indianapolis, Indiana.
