Tabla de contenidos
- Section 1. Introduction and General Anatomy (15 pages)
- Author: M. Michael Swindle
- Abstract: This Anatomic Description section is derived from Swindle M.M., Smith A.C.: Swine in the Laboratory: Surgery, Anesthesia, Imaging and Experimental Techniques, 3rd Edition, Boca Raton: CRC Press (Taylor & Francis Group), 2016. The anatomic descriptions and drawings in that book are largely based upon 40 years of experience with using swine as a surgical model by Dr. Swindle and this book should be considered complementary to that. The introductory material in each of the chapters in that book discusses comparisons to human anatomy as well as data on organ sizes, weight, and other physiologic characteristics. This chapter provides an overview of the general anatomy of swine (Sus scrofa domesticus), emphasizing the unique variations in swine anatomy.

- Section 3. Normal Histology of the Pig (26 pages)
- Author: Kristi Helke
- Abstract: The histology section focuses on the differences in histology in the pig from other species. These differences are well documented in the literature, but many of these references are either dated or obscure. This section expands on the Necropsy chapter in Swindle and Smith, Swine in the Laboratory, Third Edition, CRC Press (2016), which was written by the author of this section, by focusing on the fine histological structure of the porcine organs. The differences in porcine lymph nodes, cardiac Purkinje cells, spleen, and liver are highlighted.
Descripción
This comprehensive anatomy and histology book is the first guide specific to the pig since 1982. The high-quality, detailed full-color illustrations are accompanied by written material specific to each porcine anatomic section, with English-labeled terms for the various anatomic structures. The book covers all the major areas of interest in swine, including cardiovascular, digestive, neurologic, and thoracic structures. Differences between domestic and miniature pigs are discussed and a full-color histology section concludes the book.
The author team includes an experimental surgeon, a veterinary anatomist, and a veterinary pathologist, ensuring this atlas is appropriate for a wide range of professionals. It will be an invaluable resource for veterinarians, researchers, research technicians, and students for many years to come.
