Techniques in modern orthopaedic surgery continue to evolve at a rapid pace. The principles associated with most modern procedures, however, generally remain rooted in generally sound historical tenets established over the last 150 years. The goal of the third edition of Operative Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery continues to be to describe in a detailed and step-by-step manner the technical parts of how to do the majority of orthopaedic procedures. The “why” and “when” are covered in outline form at the beginning of each chapter, but it is assumed that the surgeon understands this information. Each of the nine major topics has been revised to include updated procedures. Additionally, the audiovisual part of the text has been increased and continues to evolve. I am very proud of the final text and very grateful to all the section editors and the authors. I have very much enjoyed working with all of them and it has been a great privilege for me. I would also like to welcome Dr. Todd J. Albert as a Co-Editor-in-Chief for this edition.
I have known Todd since he was a resident at Jefferson under Dr. Richard Rothman. He has had an outstanding career. He is an internationally known academic spine surgeon and has had major administrative roles leading the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in Philadelphia and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Dr. Albert will assume the sole Editor-in-Chief position for the fourth edition. I am absolutely delighted that he has been able to join us. Finally, I would like to thank all of the people at Wolters Kluwer for their hard work. I can still remember when Bob Hurley, in 2000, proposed the first edition of this text. The first time around it took us 10 years to get it put together. Brian Brown took over as Acquisitions Editor in the middle of the second edition and has been the guiding force for this text since then. I think Operative Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery is in good hands as we look to the future. Sam
