Some very significant developments in cancer surgery and treatment have transpired over the last few years. The veterinary sector has seen a steady increase in the number of pets diagnosed with neoplasms due to advances in current diagnostic procedures.

Therefore, this book is based on our clinical experience in the operating theatre, with the aim being to share our expertise and provide a guiding reference for when it is time to put theory into practice. We have sought to equip veterinary surgeons and students alike with helpful tools, so they may cure or improve the quality of life of the pets in their care now or in the near future.

The opening chapter features a brief introduction with the relevant oncological considerations, before explaining diagnostic methods such as biopsies, possible treatments and the rudiments of surgical oncology applicable in each case. Subsequent chapters are structured according to anatomical areas and the different organ systems. Each section
addresses the most common neoplasms and presents several clinical cases, including a detailed description of their surgical treatment accompanied by an abundance of photographs and explanatory videos. Each case is complemented with a short discussion or conclusion at the end.

Some clinical cases (e.g. the most commonly detected tumours) focus on a specific area of the body due to the neoplasm’s higher prevalence in this area. In addition to macroscopic photos of surgeries, each case is illustrated with microscopic images from the corresponding cytological or histopathological diagnostic studies.

We were compelled to produce this work in light of the elevated number of cases currently being diagnosed, coupled with the intricacy of some interventions and the shortage of subject-specific reference books. Besides the multitude of images and high-quality audiovisual materials, the text is also supported by diagrams and drawings, where necessary,
as well as practical recommendations and summary boxes highlighting the key points for each surgical technique.

While it is a book about surgery and specialised veterinary surgeons will extract the most benefit from it, the extensive graphical material will also prove extremely useful for novice and less experienced surgeons, since most vets regularly operate on mammary and simple tumours. It is worth emphasising the importance of managing all tumours, no matter
how small they may be, because if they are not treated correctly, they could affect the patient’s chance of survival.
